Getting Started
How Information is Organized
This site provides two ways to access the information:
-
Written Content: Links to information about wind energy, offshore wind, and background research are organized topically and can be accessed through the "Learn More" link located on the left sidebar.
-
Map Viewer: Access to over 50 different map layers used in our site selection process can be accessed through the "Map Viewer" link located on the left sidebar.
-
Planning areas: Areas in state and Federal waters designated for offshore wind development
-
Vineyard Power Siting Criteria: Factors identified by members to describe and compare the suitability of potential sites
- Site Quality: measures the economic viability of potential sites
- Wildlife and Important Habitats: An inventory of existing available data
- Important Local and Commercial Fishing Areas: Defined by DCFA
- Visual Impact: Results from the Vineyard Power visual impact survey
-
Other Important Data: Shipping lanes, submerged shipwrecks, etc.
Using the Map Viewer
The map viewer provides easy access to map data from a variety of sources using the Google Maps interface. The layers are grouped in folders which are accompanied by brief descriptions displayed in the text area below the map. Four of the folders correspond to the Vineyard Power Siting Criteria.
These folders are accessed through a series of tabs in the text area below the map. When clicked, the tab opens a folder in the Table of Contents which contains all the map layers for that topic. Clicking a tab also displays information about its topic in the text area. Each tab's accompanying text begins with a brief introduction and instructions on how to navigate the corresponding map layers.
To access the Map Viewer, click the "Map Viewer" link on the left sidebar. Once it loads, you will automatically find the Planning Areas folder open with a more in-depth description of how to control the Map and access information.
